History-
Boysenberries are a large, reddish-purple berry which is a cross
between a black berry, raspberry and a loganberry. It is usually
considered to be a variety of blackberry. The berries can range in
color from wine-red to nearly black, and have a taste similar to
raspberries
Health Benefits-
Boysenberries are high in the antioxidant vitamin C, known to support
immune system function and protect against cholesterol build-up.
Vitamin C also neutralizes free radicals in the body and helps prevent
the damage they can cause. Boysenberries also provide fiber for colon
health. Diets rich in healthy amounts of both vitamin C and fiber have
been shown to help lower cholesterol and reduce risk of certain types
of cancer. Fiber binds to cholesterol and helps remove it from the
intestinal tract. Fiber also promotes colon health and bowl regularity.
Boysenberries are also high in antioxidant phytochemicals called
anthocyanins. These anthocyanin pigments give berries their deep color
and they have been shown to inhibit the growth of certain cancer cells
in addition to promoting healthy aging. Another phytochemical present,
ellagic acid, acts as an antioxidant and has been revealed to possess
anti-carginogic, anti-bacterial, and anti-viral properties.
Preparation- Look for firm berries
free of mold or soft spot. Wash in cool running water, pat dry, and store for up to a week in the
refrigerator. Boysenberries make an excellent snack just as they
are. Toss them in a fruit salad, or puree them and use in place of
jelly or jam. You might consider using them in a
pie or smoothie.
