Here at LifeAdviceSite.com, we're always trying to think up tasty and interesting alternatives to replace all those foods that aren't so great for our health. We know some of the things we eat are not the best and although we're all content to indulge once in a while, we've learned having healthier alternatives to fall back on means we can enjoy ourselves more often with less guilt. Here are some of the alternatives we've come up with:
Instead of
Mayonnaise on your sandwich
Try hummus. It's made from blended chickpeas (a member of the legume family) and is available in many varieties including garlic and artichoke. Depending on the brand you buy, mayonnaise can be all natural - it's basically oil, eggs,
and vinegar, but oil and eggs can be high in fat and may not always be
the best choice. Hummus will give you new dimensions of flavor while
providing nutritional benefit!
Instead of
Syrup on your pancakes
Try a fruit topping! Pancakes are fun to eat, but they definitely need
a little something on top. Most of us reach for the butter and maple
syrup because that's all we know. Try mashing a banana and spreading a thin layer on top. Applesauce also works great, or try blended blueberries, crushed raspberries or strawberries. Heck, any berry will take the cake. Your pancake
will reach new levels of tasty. If you can, process the berries and
leave them to release their natural juices in the fridge. Yum!
Instead of
Ice Cream or Sorbet
Try frozen grapes!
They're a little weird at first, but once you get used to it you can
convince yourself you're eating fruit sorbet. You'll forgo added sugar
and preservatives of commercially produced ice cream and sorbet, and
you'll get the fiber, pectin and natural sugars from the fruit.
Eventually, you will see what a delight frozen grapes can be.
Instead of
Crackers and Cheese
Have cucumbers and cheese!
It's refreshing and still offers that satisfying crunch of crackers,
but cucumbers are way lower in both carbs and calories. Plus, you get
the added benefit of nutrition. Go for seedless cucumbers if you don't
care for seeds or the thick skin of traditional cukes. |
