Quiznos
has always prided themselves on being different. They toasted their
subs when no one else did, and ever since we've all discovered how
delectably the gentle toasting brings out the flavors of the meats and
cheeses nearly everyone offers a toasted sub on their menu
designed to tempt our taste buds.
Quiznos
is into quality, too. Signs around their restaurant and information on
their website proudly declares that they do not use any mystery meat.
They're committed to high quality meats that are sliced daily, whole
cheeses and artisan breads. In comparison to a lot of other sub shops,
Quiznos is definitely a high achiever, and it's reflected in the taste
and presentation of their food. It's not often you see a sub menu with
items like Prime Rib and Peppercorn, or Black Angus Steak on Rosemary
Parmesan, which features thinly-sliced Black Angus steak, mozzarella
and cheddar cheese along with
mushrooms and sautéed onions topped with a Honey Bourbon Mustard. Their
Baja Chicken sub features an aromatic chicken topped with bacon, tangy
melted cheddar, spicy red onion and chipolte mayonnaise, along with a
special "Baja Sauce" and fresh cilantro. All of their subs come out of
the oven with a warm center and crispy edge which, when pressed
together to enter your mouth releases a symphony of taste and texture
which is pretty impressive for a chain restaurant. Yum! |
If
you're craving something other than a sub, you can venture to order a
creamy, warm soup or a hot, hearty chili - both of which are served in a
chewy bread bowl with a delicious crust of melted cheese. Close your
eyes and it's almost like you're in Paris eating French Onion Soup. OK,
not really, but it's still good.
Quiznos also has the 411 on
nutrition, and even though huge subs filled with red meat, cheese, and
bacon may not be the best of dietary choices on a regular basis,
Quiznos strives to provide choices that
are lower in calories for those watching their intake. Like any fast
food restaurant, they want to make their food items taste good, and
sometimes that means sacrificing nutrition, so it's always important to
make wise choices for your body and your health. To help, Quiznos
recently introduced Flatbread Sammies, which are not only affordable
(around $2), but are low in calories. The Cantina Chicken and Roadhouse
Steak Sammies weigh in at 200 calories, while the Sonoma Turkey, Alpine
Chicken, and Bistro Steak Melt add another 70-85 calories. The only
caveat is that Sammies are petite - about the size of a taco. They're
great if both your appetite and your budget are on the conservative
side, or if you want to pair one up with a soup or salad. A side salad
with fat free Balsamic Vinaigrette is only 130 calories, and a cup of
chili is only about 140 calories. You can also keep your calorie intake
reasonably low by ordering small subs. The small Honey Bourbon Chicken
is only 310 calories and a small Black Angus Steak is 470 calories.
To
make sure you get a regular helping of tasty, crunch veggies, Quiznos
also offers really delicious salads. Skipping the flatbread on the
flatbread salads will definitely save some calories, but I have to
admit a particular fondness for the flatbread salads, and I really
enjoy the flatbread as a part of the whole dish. The raspberry chipotle
salad comes with a slightly sweet, slightly spicy raspberry dressing
that is to die for, and although the portion of dressing is about 5
times the amount I'd ever use on a salad, it's really tasty and unique.
They even toast the meat and cheese that goes into their salads. Mmm... cheese Heaven...
Most
Quiznos locations are in decent shape and feature pleasing,
sophisticated color schemes and reasonably comfortable chairs. Service
is normally quick, and I've never found it to be anything less than
courteous and friendly. Sure, you may be eating out of plastic dishes,
but I'd still consider it a step above the traditional fast food venue.
