Things won't make you happy.  Neither will money, circumstance or fame.  You know what makes you happy?  You do!  It's your perspective, your attitude and your decision to be happy which contributes most to your base level of happiness.  From that starting point of happiness, a pay raise, a tender moment with a loved one and any success you manage to obtain for yourself will only increase that level of happiness to new heights.  Remember if like attracts like, then feelings of happiness will only draw more situations for happiness to you.

So what if you're having a bad day (or week!), and you're not starting out on a level of joy and happiness?  What can you do to help yourself get there so you can continue to draw happiness into your life?  Try any number of these mood-shifting tricks to jump start a happy heart and energize a fulfilling and joyful life.

1. Smile
Of course if there's real pain going on in your heart, you should honor your feelings and allow those emotions to play out.  Once you've come to a place where you are ready to come out if it and don't know what to do, just start smiling.  Research has been telling us for a while that simply the act of smiling can begin to release endorphins in the brain and speed us down the path of feeling happy.  Start smiling even if you don't feel you have a reason to, and the reasons will start flowing to you.

2. Look at Photos
If you have children or grandchildren, dragging out the baby photos and giving them a browse can be a great way to remember sweet, chubby faces that always made you smile in the past.  If you're having difficulty with your spouse, looking through old wedding photos or pictures from when you were dating and you'll likely remember the good times and the reasons you fell in love.  It might even help you forgive them if you're feeling bad over something they've done!  Research even supports this special mood enhancer.

3. Aroma Therapy
Did you know certain scents can work to calm, soothe and stimulate the brain?  If you've ever inhaled a scent that reminded you of a nice day on the beach or grandma's homemade cookies, you've already experienced the awesome power of scent to affect the mind.  Experiment with candles or incense to find wonderful scents that put you in a great state of mind, and pull them out whenever you need an extra boost.

4. Dance, dance, dance!
Feeling blue?  Here's what you need to do - dance!  That's right, put on a great song that gets your heart pumping and dance around as much as you can.  The nerdier the dance, the better.  Soon you'll be enjoying the beat of the music and laughing at your own ridiculous antics.  If you have others around who would be willing to dance with you, so much the better!

5. Maestro - Music!
Don't have room to dance?  Put on the music anyway.  Music is extremely powerful and has the ability to shift our mood in less than a minute.  If we are stressed, soothing sounds can calm us in an instant.  If we are feeling a little blue, upbeat music can turn us around in seconds.  Keep a CD or MP3 arsenal of favorite tunes that always brighten your mood and crank those beats when you need to shift your own rhythm and vibration.

6. Take a Walk
Doctors tell us exercise is an excellent way to release stress and manage depression.  The physical activity gently works off pent up stress and cortisol, and taking a walk outside will expose you to daylight instead of light-bulbs, so you'll feel instantly revitalized.  (Just don't forget to wear your sunblock!)  The time you spend walking will also give you moments to reflect, meditate and reset your mind to a peaceful, happy vibration.

7. Send in the Clowns!
Know someone who always makes you laugh?  Call them right away and lose yourself in good times.  Don't know anyone funny?  Try going online and reading jokes or watching videos of stand-up comedians.  If there's a show or a movie that always seems to tickle your funny bone, find it and enjoy the giggles.

8. And the List, Please...
Feeling down in the dumps?  Sit down and make a list of everything good in your life.  It could be as simple as having running water.  Think about all the things you can be grateful for and all the blessings you have.  When you start to see them pile up in front of you, you'll realize how much good there is to enjoy.

9.  Go to a Beautiful Place
This can work literally and metaphorically.  If there's a place that always brings you peace and enjoyment like the beach, the lake, a park or the woods - go there immediately.  Allow the beauty of your surroundings to seep into your consciousness, and enjoy what nature created for you.  You can also do this in your mind.  Close your eyes and picture a lovely place where you would like to be.  Imagine the scenery, the weather and who you would like to be there with you (or not!)

10. Clean Out Your Closet
Wherever you can clear out space and clutter in your surroundings, do it.  Whether it be your closet or your desk drawer, you will find calling structure and order into your space can actually bring order and harmony to your mind and your feelings as well.
