For some strange reason, we humans have always suffered for fashion.
Who knows why! Apparently when it comes right down to it - looking
good (oddly) feels better than actually feeling good, and many
of us would choose to be in a little discomfort if it means looking fab
in the meantime. We've all been there. Who among us has not at one
time laid on the bed and sucked in a little belly flab just to zip up
the perfect pair of jeans? They looked so good we didn't even care we
had to spend the whole day sucking in the gut lest the waistband slice
into that tender flesh with a searing pain. <wince>
Sure
we've all done it, but maybe we should think twice about it. As it
turns out, there are a lot of health issues associated with
uncomfortably tight clothing. In recent years, skinny jeans have
become all the rage. They are slim, streamline and sexy. Topped with
a great cardigan or cute blouse, skinny jeans lend a dainty silhouette
and create the illusion of long, slim legs. Everyone who can loves to
shimmy into their skinny jeans. |
Even before skinny jeans burst
onto the runways, many of us were wearing our jeans a size or two
skinnier than the size of our bodies. Notwithstanding the utter
difficulty caused in trying to slip into those too-skinny jeans and all
manner of clothing that is improperly sized for the body, wearing them
can actually cause serious health concerns. Too-tight jeans have been
recently linked to a nerve condition known as "meralgia paresthetica"
or, “tingling
thigh syndrome.” It turns out skin-tight fabric can cut off blood flow
to the lateral femoral
cutaneous nerve in the leg and cause numbness, tingling or a burning
sensation along
the thigh. Prolonged restriction of blood flow can cause permanent
damage to the nerve or even serious blood clots in the legs.
Overly
tight clothing can also cause internal damage. Our organs and
particularly the intestines and stomach are designed to stretch, move
and expand throughout the day as our body digests and moves food and
fluids through the system. Constricting clothing can interrupt these
motions and cause abdominal discomfort as well as possible damage and
gastrointestinal issues.
Men already know not to wear pants that
constrict because it can affect fertility. Women are susceptible to
possible bladder infections as well as yeast infections when wearing
overly tight clothing.
Perhaps like most things in life and in fashion, if you absolutely must for the sake of fashion - do it in moderation.
